Spark plugs are crucial components in automobile engines. They are responsible for igniting the air-fuel mixture in the cylinders, thereby driving the engine to operate. Choosing the appropriate spark plug has a great impact on engine performance, fuel consumption, and service life. Spark plugs are mainly divided into the following materials, and each material has its own advantages and disadvantages:
  1. Nickel alloy spark plug
Characteristics: Nickel alloy spark plugs are the most common traditional spark plugs. The electrode material is mainly made of nickel and copper.
Advantages:
  • Cheap price: This is its biggest advantage and is suitable for economical vehicles.
  • Wide range of applications: Suitable for various ordinary driving needs.
Disadvantages:
  • Short service life: Generally, the service life is between 20,000 and 30,000 kilometers.
  • Poor conductivity and heat resistance: Under high-load or high-temperature working conditions, the performance is not as good as that of precious metal spark plugs.
  1. Platinum spark plug
Characteristics: The central electrode of a platinum spark plug is made of platinum, with good conductivity and corrosion resistance.
Advantages:
  • Long service life: Generally, it can reach 50,000 to 60,000 kilometers.
  • Corrosion resistance: Suitable for long-term use and has good stability in high-temperature environments.
Disadvantages:
  • High price: Compared with nickel alloy spark plugs, the price is much higher.
  • General ignition performance: Compared with iridium spark plugs, the ignition effect is slightly inferior.
  1. Iridium spark plug
Characteristics: The central electrode of an iridium spark plug is made of iridium. Iridium is a metal with high hardness and high temperature resistance.
Advantages:
  • Super long service life: Generally, it can reach 80,000 to 100,000 kilometers, and some high-end products are even longer.
  • Excellent ignition performance: The iridium electrode is thinner and the ignition is more efficient, suitable for vehicles with high requirements for power performance.
  • Improved fuel efficiency: High ignition accuracy helps improve fuel economy.
Disadvantages:
  • Expensive price: It is the most expensive among the three materials.
  • High maintenance requirements: Although the service life is long, once damaged, the replacement cost is high.
  1. Double platinum spark plug
Characteristics: The central electrode and side electrode of double platinum spark plugs are plated with platinum. The performance is between platinum and iridium spark plugs.
Advantages:
  • Longer service life: Longer than ordinary platinum spark plugs and suitable for environments requiring stable ignition.
  • Better corrosion resistance: The electrode has better durability and oxidation resistance.
Disadvantages:
  • Medium to high price: Although cheaper than iridium spark plugs, it is more expensive than ordinary platinum spark plugs.
Selection suggestions:
  • Economy cars: Nickel alloy or ordinary platinum spark plugs are sufficient.
  • Medium and high-end cars: Platinum or double platinum spark plugs are more suitable, taking into account both service life and performance.
  • For vehicles that pursue performance or often drive in extreme environments: Priority is given to iridium spark plugs, which perform well under high-load and high-temperature conditions.
The choice of each spark plug should be determined according to specific driving habits, vehicle types, and budgets.
